This is the first book in a chapter book series featuring Freddie Ramos, a boy who receives a mysterious box with super-powered purple sneakers. From that day on, Freddie searches for ways to be a superhero. With comic book style illustrations, this lively story gives young readers an opportunity to consider what it would be like to have super speed. Zapato Power: Freddie Ramos Takes Off is a 2010 CYBILS Awards winner, an ALSC Great Early Elementary Read, and a Maryland Blue Crab Young Reader Honor Book. The series continues with Zapato Power #2: Freddie Ramos Springs into Action, Zapato Power #3: Freddie Ramos Zooms to the Rescue, and Zapato Power #4: Freddie Ramos Makes a Splash.
“Designed for early readers, this chapter book includes frequent black-and-white cartoon illustrations . . . . The few Spanish words establish the boy’s ethnicity but will be understood in context. . . . An unusually appealing early chapter book.” — Kirkus Reviews.
